Thrashers trade defenceman Schneider to Canadiens

The Atlanta Thrashers have traded defenceman Mathieu Schneider to his former team, the Montreal Canadiens.

In exchange, the Thrashers receive a second round draft pick in 2009 and a third round selection in 2010. In addition to Schneider, Montreal receives a conditional pick at this year's draft.

Schneider previously played for the Canadiens from the 1989-90 season until 1995, winning a Stanley Cup with the team in 1993. He was traded to the Islanders in 1995.

This season, the New York native has 4 goals and 11 assists in 44 games.

The 39 year-old was selected in the third round (44th overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. A well-traveled veteran, Schneider has had stints with the Canadiens, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Kings, Red Wings, Ducks and Thrashers.

I think it's a good pick up. I would say Montreal overpaid a little bit, not alot but just a bit. Schneider will definitely give Montreal more experience at the point which is gladly needed. It's good that they didn't get rid of a roster player for him. Montreal has so much talent on the farm team that giving up some draft picks is not a big deal. Plus montreal is receiving a pick back from the thrasher anyways so it's not bad. I think that the habs are trying to reunite the 1993 team. bounce

Well now you can see Schneider and Brisebois at the point. Now the problem with gainey is for the last 3 years Montreal was so close to landing the big star and failed each time. This year he has to Land the one he's looking for.
