Rangers pick up Avery off waivers

New York might be the only place Sean Avery can make it.

The controversial winger is back on Broadway with the New York Rangers after he was claimed on re-entry waivers Tuesday, as Sportsnet first reported last week. The Rangers will split the remainder of his four-year, $15.5 million contract with the Dallas Stars, who signed Avery away from the Rangers as a free agent this past summer.

Avery's tenure in Dallas ended quickly, however, after his derogatory comments toward Calgary defenceman Dion Phaneuf's actress girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. Avery was suspended by the league pending anger management counselling and the Stars said they had no interest in having him back. He recently returned to hockey via the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.

Prior to joining Dallas, Avery had spent two seasons with the Rangers to considerable success. However, that was under coach Tom Renney, who was fired recently and replaced with John Tortorella, who has been critical of Avery's behaviour, saying he doesn't belong in the league.

I definitely think this is the last straw for avery. He has to turn it around NOW! For the very simple reason is that everybody will be watching his every move more now than ever. Honestly if avery can just play hockey and keep his mouth on the ice, he will be a good asset for the rangers. Now he's back and with tort's words on tsn about avery, I can only imagine the fireworks that could errupt in the dressing room. But maybe, avery needs a coach like john torterella who is in your face and not afraid to point fingers.
